Microsoft has introduced Virtual WiFi feature to Windows XP as a research project, which was halted in 2006. You can get more information from Microsoft Research.
Now, Virtual WiFi is built in the latest Windows product – Windows 7. Unfortunately, this feature is hidden, without graphic user interface (GUI) or any help documents.
Why this thusness? “But driver support didn’t get finished. The low-level code is in there, but the driver-level stuff isn’t. And there’s no app or setting in Windows to turn it on.” said Alex Gizis, the CEO of Nomadio, the company specializes in military network consulting and development.
Different from Ad hoc connection, Virtual WiFi creates a Virtual Router, or Virtual Wireless Hotspot for other devices. You can share your wired or wireless Internet connection with computers or mobile phones that support WiFi technology.
Today, I will guide you to turn on this feature in 3 ways, hope you can enjoy the convenience, and share your happiness.
- Enable Virtual WiFi manually
- Launch Command Prompt as administrator.

- Enter the following command:
netsh wlan set hostednetwork mode=allow ssid=Hotspot key=passwordhere
and
netsh wlan start hostednetwork
(Replace Hotspot and passwordhere to your preferred SSID and key. The wireless connection is encrypted with WPA2 encryption, with no method of disabling it.) - Then you can see a new Wireless Network Connection in Network Connections of Network and Internet, which Device name is Microsoft Virtual WiFi Miniport Adapter.

- Next, find out your Internet connection and right click on it, select Properties, tick Allow other network users to connect through this computer’s Internet connection and select the Virtual WiFi wireless network connection established before.
Enable Internet Connection Sharing (ICS)
- Use Virtual Router Manager
You can download Virtual Router Manager from Codeplex, type in Network Name (SSID), Password and select Shared Connection, then click Start Virtual Router.
All connected devices will be listed in the main interface of Virtual Router Manager.

- Use Connectify
Fill up the form HERE to get the beta version of Connectify. Install and launch the program, enter WiFi Name, Password and select Shared Internet Connection, click HOTSPOT ON.

What’s more, you can double click Connect Clients objects to customize an icon for it.
Things are all done, now you can use your WiFi devices to connect to this Virtual Hotspot.
